Last month's top WRY999 Twitter post was a link to a study of the Mediterranean diet and frailty.

This study combined four datasets of 5789 older adults in France, Spain, Italy and China.

The results demonstrated a connection between a Mediterranean style diet and reduced risk of becoming frail over a four-year followup period.

Those reporting high Mediterranean diet compliance had a greater than 50% reduction in risk for frailty compared to those with low Mediterranean diet compliance.

Other top Twitter posts included a new treatment for hand tremor, benefits of exercise, the epigenetics of autism, bariatric surgery and health benefits linked to church attendance.
There is increasing interest in the genetics of cognitive ability.

Understanding these genes and their mechanism may provide clues for new drugs for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative disorders.

A recent genetic study of cognitive ability found an interesting association.

Smart people live longer.

More accurately, this study found that higher levels of cognition in subjects was linked to later parental age of death.

This association was not the primary focus of the study but of interest.

The mechanism for this effect is unclear. Perhaps it relates more directly to level of education or ability to avoid health risks.
Tinnitus is a chronic disorder characterized by persistent buzzing or ringing in the ears.

It is a common disorder among elderly patients and in those exposed to high volume noise.

There is very little clinicians can offer to those that suffer with tinnitus.

A recent study supports fMRI directed neurofeedback as a treatment for tinnitus.

This small trial needs replication but appears to be promising as a first step in a new treatment approach.
Neuroscience Medicine Research Update

Brain connectivity as measured by MRI and diffusion tensor imaging is becoming increasing important in neuroscience medicine.

One potential application of MRI is assessing the level of brain damage following cardiac arrest.

A team from Johns Hopkins reported on a study of 46 subjects with cardiac arrest and coma. Brain MRI was obtained an average of 12.6 days following arrest.

Good outcome was linked to limited impairment in the default mode network and other regional markers.

Brain changes with weightlessness in long-term space travel are important to understand. A recent brain imaging study of astronauts gives us some clues.

Long-term weightlessness was linked to:

narrowing of sulcus between parietal and frontal lobes

upward shift of brain

narrowing of the CSF spaces at top of brain

They have been involved in some concussion research in coordination with the Athletic Department.

Today I ran across a study from the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior at Nebraska.

The study used high-density EEG in studying memory function following concussion. You can access the MedicalXpress story by clicking the Neuroscience Medicine FB link below.
Disclosure: I'm bragging a little in this post as I my M.D. degree is from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The top posts was a summary of some research that suggested living near a forest correlates with health of the brain amygdala.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The potential mechanism for such an effect is unclear. Other behavioral factors such as walking in nature have also been shown to correlate with a variety of health measures.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Other topics on top this month included:
Yesterday the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) changed it's recommendations on the shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine.

The advisory group now recommends two doses of a new vaccine called Shingrix.

The new vaccine is not expected to be available until later this year. It may take some additional time for Medicare and private insurance to move to cover the vaccine.

The CDC recommends lowering the age to 50 for this vaccine.

This is important for neuroscience medicine because shingles can involve the eye and cornea, can be related to stroke and can cause a chronic pain neuropathy.

Here is a link to a news report from the News & Observer about this change.

I have owned the iPhone in the past including two iPhone 4s models and an iPhone 5s.

However, I eventually discovered drawbacks with the iPhone that pushed me to the Android system. One of these drawbacks was the growing cost:feature ratio for the iPhone. The incremental small changes in recent iterations of the iPhone have been small and for me do not support the iPhone cost.

My phone is a Moto G4 Plus. You can get the top of the line of this model for $199 from B&H Photo Video

Here are just a few of the features that I have on my one year old Moto G4 Plus that even the recently announced iPhone X lacks.

1. Expandable memory-The iPhone X lacks a slot for swapping in or an a memory card to expand the ROM. If you want more memory you will need to pay Apple more for a phone with more memory. My phone has an expandable memory slot. The base memory in my phone is 64 GB and I have added an addition 32 GB for 96 GB total. The 32 GB memory card is only about $12.
2. 4 GB RAM- RAM is the working memory of your phone. The more RAM the more apps you can have running and the faster app speed will be. The iPhone X has only 3 GM RAM and the iPhone 8 and 8 plus only 2 GB.
3. Headphone jack- I have tried wireless headphones but find so far they are inferior to wired headphones. The iPhone X lacks a headphone jack but you can use an adapter for wired headphones.
4. Value-priced peripheral accessories- Almost all of the Apple iPhone peripheral accessories carry a premium price. With my phone, I have a selection of vendors for peripherals that are usually priced 50% or less than an Apple peripheral accessory
5. No insurance premiums. Another feature I like with a phone like the Moto G4 Plus is no need for phone insurance. If I lose, crack or damage my phone, I buy a new one. I avoid a $100-200 deductible charge plus monthly insurance fees for a premium phone.

Phone choice is a personal matter. For some buying the new iPhone X makes sense. For me, I'm very happy with my frugal but high performance choice.

Disclosure: This is an unsolicited post. I was not paid by any vendor for writing this opinion post.

I ran across a pamphlet the U.S. CDC and NIOSH sent to former NFL players a few years ago. This pamphlet highlighted a study of nearly 3500 former NFL players who were compared to a group of control men.

The study found former NFL players had a fourfold risk of ALS. They also had a fourfold risk of Alzheimer's disease. Parkinson's disease appeared at the same rate in NFL and control samples. Of interest, offensive and defensive linemen were somewhat protected from this risk.

Seven NFL players in the sample had ALS compared to an expected number of between one and two.

You can access the pamphlet by clicking HERE

This pamphlet reminded me of a film I viewed several months ago and wanted to recommend to Brain Post readers. The move is titled Gleason, a documentary film covering the life of ex-NFL player Steve Gleason who was diagnosed with ALS.

The movie is intense but highlight's Steve's "never give up" attitude and development of a support team along with using advanced technology to deal with the effects of ALS.

Gleason has been free with Amazon Prime membership. Here is the trailer to give you a glimpse of the movie.
